iMics and bad wires

I borrowed Chris’ iMic, and had exactly the same results that I’d had without it. That is, the left channel very quiet, the right channel fine.

Bah.

So I went to Radio Shack and got new wires, and that seems to have resolved the problem, although now the left is slightly louder than the right. And changing the balance doesn’t seem to actually fix that. Oh well, it’s better than before. We’ll see what kinds of results I get now.

Bandwidth

I appear to be consuming 100% of my available bandwidth, most of the day, due to my Christmas Carol recordings. While this is very flattering, it is having other undesirable side-effects, such as my email being delayed and rejected. I’m in the process of moving these files to somewhere else with more available bandwidth. So if you’re having sluggish responses, that’s why. Please keep downloading. But you might have better results later today.

Update

I’ve moved all the files to my coloc, which has considerably more available bandwidth. This should greatly improve downloads of those files, as well as improve the performance of everything else here on buglet.rcbowen.com. Thanks for your patience.

Please use your indoor voice

Almost to San Diego. It has been a very trying trip, due to some fellow passengers.

The folks across the aisle for me appear to be flying for the first
time. They have a small boy. Mom, Dad, and little boy. None of the three
of them have what we like to call an “indoor voice.” They have had a
number of little disagreements, ranging from who was responsible for the
delay in the flight, to how many hours time difference it is between
Cincinnati and San Diego, to why there were insufficient toys packed for
the child.

The child, naturally enough, wanted to explore his surroundings, and was
strictly forbidden from doing so. He was not permitted to speak, move,
look around, walk around, jump, laugh, or put his feet up on the seat
back. He was grudgingly permitted to breath.

Unsurprisingly, he quickly began screaming. Upon which development, the
father figure turned him over to the mother figure, saying for all to
hear that he found that rather too frustrating to deal with. Actually,
imagine that with a few more expletives in it. There. Now you’ve got it.

On the bright side, the movie (Sky High) was very entertaining, if exceedingly dumb. Looks like they’re showing Polar Express on the way home.

New grill

In preparation for Labor Day, I tried to get the grill working. Since the grill has probably not been fired up in about 3 years, it’s not in the best shape. As I started cleaning out the old lava rocks, the burners crumbled into rust and dust. 🙁
So, the decision whether to get a new grill, or try to fix the one that’s there. I went to Walmart and looked around, finally finding that I could get replacement burners to stick in there. Looks like I can also get a replacement grill surface. So I can essentially have a new grill for about $35, rather than the $150 or $200 it would cost to actually replace the whole thing.
So I got a new burner, and spent the last hour assmbling it and coaxing it into the grill. And, voila, I have a new grill, sort of, and should be able to grill something tomorrow. I’m very pleased with myself.
Of course, the grill surface itself is in pretty poor shape, and I also spent about a half hour scrubbing it until it looks like I could actually cook on it and not die as a result. And I’ve replaced the icky nasty 10-year-old lava rocks with nice new ceramic briquettes.
So, perhaps tomorrow I’ll see if I actually remember how to grill something. 🙂

Grandmere

I suppose it’s not too uncommon, at a time like this, to have trouble knowing what to say, and how to remember. The last time I visited, I don’t think Grandmere knew I had been there.

I really don’t want to remember that. I want to remember her home, neat as a pin, and her delighful sunday afternoon dinners. I want to remember riding in the limo to their 50th anniversary celebration, and how they were sure that the limo was supposed to be for someone else. There are a lot of happy memories, and a good life to be thankful for.

Grandmere passed away early this morning.

Parked in the garage

Since coming back from San Diego, I’ve been working like a mule, and this evening – about 5 minutes ago, actually – I was finally able to pull my Jeep into the garage. This is a major milestone, but it certainly doesn’t mean that I’m all settled in. It does mean, however, that all the heavy furniture is moved.

Well, except for the washer and dryer. And I’m really unsure what I’m going to do with them. Probably hang on to the dryer, and get rid of the washer. Anyone need an almost-new washer?

I’m discovering some things.

First, just in case I didn’t know this already, I’m finding that I have a LOT of books. Yeah, I already knew I had somewhere around 500 or so, but apparently that was only a partial inventory. I’m not quite sure where I’m going to put all these bookcases. I think maybe the couch was a poor investment, in that it consumed wall space where I could have put two book shelves.

Also, I’m discovering that I have a lot more computers than I had any idea of. So far, I have located 10 working computers, as well as the 5 or so not-working ones. Why do I keep the not-working ones, you ask? Well, one of them is an end-table, and another is a stool. Really. No kidding. I’ll post pictures later. The others, well, I keep them because, you never know, I might need them some day.

And I’ve found 9 monitors. Yes, that’s nine. And I honestly have no idea where they all came from. They all work, so no duds in there. And they are all reasonably nice. A couple 17″ ones in there, that I’m actually using. The rest are 15″s.

I might put one computer downstairs, in which case I’d have a use for, total, 5 computers (*maybe* 6) and 4 monitors (the stuff on the server rack is on a KVM). I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of the stuff, but I don’t think I’m going to hang onto it for much longer. (No, please don’t bother asking for it. I’ll let you know when I’ve decided to let folks pick over it.)

Oh, and did I mention I have a lot of books? Sheesh.

Moving on up

This afternoon I took posession of my house, and started moving a few things over. I moved a few hundred books, since I don’t have enough book boxes. And I moved my server rack, and the 4 servers which have been languishing in my garage for the last few years. I hope they all still boot, as at least two of them were very very nice servers at one point.

It looks like there are a few repairs that need to be done on the house – mostly rotting window frames, and a little bit if crumbling steps and sidewalks – but apart from that, everything looks good.

I picked up a couple very nice couches at a yard sale for next to nothing, and moved those, and a selected few other things.

But now I need to start packing for my trip tomorrow, as I leave for OSCon tomorrow evening, and I’m not quite packed yet.

I’m going to return home to a *LOT* of work that will have to get done in a very short period of time. But after that work, I’ll be in my own house, and have room to turn around without bumping into something.

This is the last night that I’ll be in this apartment. Sarah is a little sad about that, but also happy about it. Mostly sad because we won’t have a pool any more. Maybe we can keep the key and sneak back over occasionally. Muhahaha!
