Reading: The Sword of Shannara

I’ve started reading The Sword of Shannara. Re-reading, I should say, and it might even be the third time. It holds up, and is as gripping now as when I first read a beat-up copy from the school library at Florida High School in 1982.

40 years later, Terry Brooks is still telling stories, but these are the ones – the original trilogy – that I keep coming back to. There are passages that I remember from the first time, and others that are new again.

I’m looking forward to this new old adventure.

  1. I ate up these books when I was younger, but I still think this one was such a blatant rip off of LOTR that it kind of tarnishes the experience.

I mean, you can easily map almost every character from LOTR to those in this book, but I think later on Terry Brooks finds his own voice that makes it worth reading, especially the Word and Void trilogy

  2. Yeah, I certainly see a lot of echoes – more this time than the last time I read it. And there’s a *lot* of scenes that are pretty direct echoes, too – no spoilers here though. I’m still enjoying it enormously.
