Work bought me a new laptop. It's a Compaq evo n600c. Not my first choice, but can't beat the price.
Two weird things about it.
It is very strange to have a laptop that actually runs for *hours* on the battery. For years no, my ThinkPad has gotten, maybe, 10 minutes off of the battery.
Second, it won't suspend. This is a shame because I use that feature extensively. In fact, with my ThinkPad, I would go months without rebooting - just suspend. To be more accurate, it suspends, but won't come back, or comes back with very corrupted video. Hopefully there's a fix for this somewhere, but I have not found anything helpful yet.
I have an Compaq Evo 400nc, that I got about 2 years ago, running Windows 2000. It suspends pretty well, and I only boot it, if I take it off the power supply, as it hardly holds batteries for a day, even when not used at all, and only an hour or so, if used immediately, so I never take it along. On the other hand, I never leave home without my iBook SE that is about a year older than the Evo. I got new batteries about a year ago, and it still holds more than three hours of use, and suspension works a lot better than on the Evo. It wakes up in less than 5 seconds, which means that I use it all over the place, on the train and on the bus in the morning, taking notes during the day, and on the bus and train in the evening. Just closing the lid and it goes to sleep, opening it again and I just work on. I will never have the patience to work with anything less than that, so I guess I won't be getting another Evo soon ;-) YMMV of course, but I hope that you get your suspension problem done, or else I can recommend an Apple instead :-)
