MT software license

So it turns out that, as people have been telling me, the MT software license is in fact pretty not-open. Among other things, it says

You may not redistribute the Software without Licensor's prior
written consent. Although you may modify or create derivative copies
of the Software for your own use, you may not distribute modified or
derivative copies of the Software.

I suppose that's pretty normal for software, but does not mesh with the way that I view the world, and, I suppose, it's pretty clear that I've already violated it, having distributed modified versions of various parts of the software. So I suppose I'll have to find some other package to migrate to. I'm leaning towards Ken Coar's software, if he lets me use it. I expect he'll have a somewhat more open license,

I know you are a perl guy and all, but what is it exactly that you have against b2?

He is a PERL snob! Seriously though you should look at it, it replicates almost all of MT's function as well as having a vibrant community hacking around it. It IS made with PHP, but come on, use that big ol brain for the dark side a little.

Sheesh.

I have nothing *against* b2. I have not tried it, and know nothing about it. I don't have php installed on any of my servers, since it tends not to play nice with mod_perl in some settings. But I don't know enough about b2 to have anything against it, or for it for that matter. I'm more inclined to use Ken's software because I have assisted slightly in the development, and will likely assist more if I'm using it than if I'm not.

For what it is worth, if you are not allowed to use Ken's system Hixie of hixie.ch has released his software, and I believe it is built with perl as well.

Have fun, they both seem to be stable if lacking on the visuals, but then again you know people to help out with that, don't you.

MT is commercial software. its how Six Apart stays afloat. and you can distribute bits of it modified (which is why http://mt-plugins.org exists). you simply cannot distribute the whole application.
